The Distinctives of an Evangelical Church – The Scriptures

The Distinctives of an Evangelical Church
Our church at Haddon is an evangelical church. In the next series of blogs, I want to inform you in detail of what doctrinally defines and distinguishes a genuinely evangelical church. This series of blogs will detail for you what we believe as evangelical Christians and what the biblical basis is for those beliefs.

The Scriptures

We believe:

  • That the scriptures, as originally written, were verbally inspired. (II Timothy 3:16)
  • That the scriptures are the product of Holy Spirit controlled men. (II Peter 1:19-20)
  • That the scriptures are truth without any admixture of error for their matter. (Psalm 119:89; John 17:17; I Peter 1:23; I Peter 1:25; John 10:34-35)
  • That the scriptures are the true centre of Christian union. (Psalm 119:93, 105 & 130; II Timothy 3:15-17; I Corinthians 15:3-4; I Peter 1:22-23)
  • That the one great theme of the scriptures is Christ. (Genesis 3:15; John 6:39; Revelation 22:20)
  • That the scriptures should be loved, read and studied by everyone. (Psalm 1:2; Psalm 119:93, 103, 104-105, 111, 127, 129-130; John 6:39; John 20:30-31; I Thessalonians 4:18; II Timothy 2:15 & 3:15-17)
  • That the scriptures are our only rule of faith and practice. (John 6:39; II Timothy 3:15-17; Colossians 3:17)
  • That the scriptures must possess the central place in the life of every church and every pulpit. (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:42; II Timothy 4:1-2)
